Actor turned director Gurudutt has managed to make good use of Darshan’s image. ‘Datta’ is indeed a typical Darshan film with right dose of fights, songs, comedy and sentiments. The director has succeeded in portraying the actor in a different way. He brings smile on the faces of the viewers by uttering comedy dialogues while fighting unlike speaking strong dialogues in his earlier films. The best part of the film is that there is no overdose of any element. It has all the ingredients to entertain the audience.
Datta is an illiterate orphan. He lives by stealing and supporting the poor in the society. This way, he gets the sympathy of the people. He comes across Ramya and falls in love with her at first sight. He returns all the things that he has stolen from her house so as to please her. He hides his identity in front of her by pretending as an educated guy and a police inspector. However, the girl comes to know the truth and dumps him.
In the meantime, a rich man approaches Datta to act as his son so that his bedridden wife would recover from her illness. The son has been hiding in a separate place for obvious reasons. Now, Datta accompanies the rich man to his town for the mission. However, he is surprised to find hooligans following them. He happens to see Ramya in the same place. She is on a mission to kill the son of the rich man for revenge. She mistakes him as the son of the rich man. Now, Datta does all he can to make her understand that revenge won’t solve the problem and only settling the differences will bring about peace. The rest of the film is on how Datta and Ramya tie the knot after uniting the warring families.
For a change, Darshan steals the heart of the audience with his fight and comedy sequences. He looks good and his comedy timings with Komal are brilliant. Ramya has nothing much to do but she has pumped in lots of glamour into it. Other actors like Vinaya Prakash, Srinath and Avinash are fine but Keerthi Chawla is not impressive. The flip side of the film is the slow first half. However, it has managed to pick up the pace in the second half. Ramesh Babu's camera work is one of the highlights of the film. Music director Patnayak’s tunes and background music are good.
On the whole, it is a good entertainer. Darshan and Komal have made all the difference to the film.
